Exeter City Women will put the Easter Eggs on hold as they head to Swindon on Sunday in search of a significant three points in the race for promotion.
Town have had a strong season and currently sit in sixth place, building on last year’s points tally with an additional eight points to date. Four wins from the first six league fixtures put the Wiltshire side in contention for the top spots entering into 2023, but the new year has seen a slight change in fortune, with Town recording four wins from thirteen, three of which have come against the division’s bottom two sides. A heavy defeat to Southampton Women’s FC at the weekend has seen the departure of Manager James Lally, the team’s progressive season and entertaining style not being rewarded with a chance for Lally to develop the team further.
There can be no confusion over the one to watch this weekend. Annabelle Colston has had a fantastic season in hitting twenty-five goals from her twenty-four games, starring in cup competitions but also hitting seven in the National League. Megan Attenborough is a strong midfield presence and scored twice when the two sides last met, with Emily McGrogan always impressive in the Swindon goal.
Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley’s side will be under no illusion as to the difficulty of their task on Sunday. A 3-0 defeat at Fairford last season all but ended the Grecians hopes of competing for promotion in what proved the most sobering afternoon of the campaign. Victory would see the gap at the top increase to nine points and apply pressure on Cardiff to be faultless in their pursuit. Sunday’s final away game of the season for the Grecians may well prove pivotal in the race for the Title.
