Gary Caldwell has given his thoughts as City suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat at Cambridge to extend the club's winless run to 13 league matches.
A controversial first half penalty from Gassan Ahadme was matched in the second half by Elias Kachunga's tap in to down the Grecians, who had threatened an equaliser on several occasions in the second half before the sucker punch of a goal.
"We go a goal down after a poor decision from the referee, but I thought we could have competed better," Gary said.
"After that we started to creating some good opportunities but couldn't get in behind enough, then shot ourselves in the foot by giving the ball away in a dangerous area to start their counter attack.
"I did think Sonny Cox was excellent when he came on and he had a good impact, but too often we give ourselves a mountain to climb."
