The Grecians’ gaffer Gary Caldwell said there were lessons to learn from both fixtures on a hot Tuesday under the Devon sun.
Beginning with the game this afternoon against Brentford B, while City’s manager was happy with how his side came back from 1-0 down to win 4-1, he wasn’t pleased with how his side kicked off.
“We weren’t ready to start a football match,” Gary said. “Brentford B were a young team and were excellent in what they did, but against a better team we could pay the price for that.
“It was good that we came back after that, we scored some good goals, we recognised when to play space and when we could play the free player.”
On this evening’s fixture at Torquay, Gary was left frustrated that his team didn’t put the game to bed after dominating the first half. City were 2-0 up against their Torbay opponents but two goals in the final 10 minutes from the hosts denied the Grecians a second win of the day.
“I’m not really pleased with what I’ve seen out there.
“First half, total control, the game should be well and truly over. We toy with the game a little bit, we get a bit complacent, we don’t put the ball in the net as many times as we should and that can always come back to haunt you.
“As good as we were for periods in that first half we have to be leading by more goals, we have to be ruthless and it’s a massive learning experience for a relatively new group of players.”
