The club are delighted to announce the signing of Northern Ireland international striker Josh Magennis, following his release from Wigan Athletic at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old 6ft 2 forward, who has made 79 appearances for his country, arrives in Devon on a one-year contract to continue his career that has seen him make almost 600 appearances in the Championship, League One, League Two and the Scottish Premiership.

He is Gary Caldwell’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Jack McMillan last week.

Magennis began his career as a youngster in Northern Ireland as a goalkeeper before switching to the attack in 2008 ahead of turning professional.

He joined the academy at Cardiff City – signing his first pro deal in 2009, playing ten times before a loan move to Grimsby Town. He joined Aberdeen in 2010 and stayed four years in the north of Scotland, scoring ten. He also spent time in Scotland with St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

The Bangor-born striker joined Charlton Athletic in 2016 and scored 20 times in 81 appearances for the Addicks in League One. A year with Bolton was followed by Hull City, where Josh scored 26 times in 88 across the second and third tier, gaining promotion with the Tigers in 2020-21, bagging 19 goals that season.

Magennis joined Caldwell’s former club Wigan in 2021, again gaining a promotion in his second season with the club. He played just shy of 100 times for the Latics, scoring a hat trick last September in the EFL Trophy. He scored 8 times in League One last season.

Internationally, Josh has scored eleven goals for his country – most recently in October against San Marino. Other goals also include those against the Netherlands and Germany.

"This has been in the works for a while, and the communication has been nothing but positive throughout, so it feels really good to get it over the line," Josh said.

"The ambition of the club really sold it to me, seeing that there is such a young and dynamic squad."

Manager Gary Caldwell added: "Josh is someone that had plenty of options this summer but has chosen to come to Exeter City, and of course we are delighted with that.

"He is a real proven goalscorer at this level, and the level above, as well as having great international pedigree with Northern Ireland. His experience will be of huge benefit to our younger forwards such as Sonny Cox and Milli Alli."
