Women's Match Preview: Hashtag United (A)

Match preview graphic for Exeter City Women away at Hashtag United, on Sunday, April 13 - 3pm at Parkside (Aveley FC)

Exeter City Women travel to Hashtag United this Sunday for their final away game of the season, with both sides looking for three points to keep them as high up the league table as possible.

The Grecians, who currently sit third, will make the journey to the second place Tags, who play at Aveley FC's Parkside stadium in Essex. Abbie Britton's side go into this match having won their last five in a row, most recently thumping Plymouth Argyle 6-0 in the Devon FA Challenge Cup Final.

However the hosts were be one of the toughest teams City have faced this season, proven in last October's hard-fought 0-0 draw at Coach Road.

City know their targets and want to finish as high up the table as possible and will have to be at their best to return to Devon with points come Sunday night, but with the belief currently coursing through the team, anything is possible.

The Opposition

The Tags head into Sunday's match one place and three points ahead of City, after an unexpected 2-0 loss away at Gwalia in their last league game. Since that match almost three weeks ago, they've only played once, a County Cup crushing 8-0 win against Billericay Town on Thursday night.

Foward Malika Apindia scored her 64th goal for the club in that final, becoming United's all-time leading goalscorer, while Sophie Baigent also netted a hat-trick, two players that the City backline will have to keep a firm eye on.

Manager Jason Stephens has recently announced that he'll be stepping down at the end of the season, after being in the club's hotseat since before AFC Basildon were rebranded as Hashtag United in 2020. He led the club to a tier four title in 2023 and their highest ever finish last season.

Hashtag are coming to the end of their second season at tier three level, after a successful debut where they finished second behind Portsmouth. Top spot still isn't ruled out, however the Tags will be relying on Ipswich's results in their final two matches to go their way.

Last Meeting

Sunday will be the first time City have travelled to play Hashtag, with the first meeting this season at Coach Road back in late October - a hard fought 0-0 draw. Watch the highlights below ⬇️
